One of the requirements for qualified piano teachers to become a member of the Alberta Registered Music Teachers' Association (ARMTA) is to have a Police check completed.

"With respect to the Police Check, this is becoming a standard practice in
organizations that work with children, particularly so for those who interact in one-on-one situations. We recommend that you keep up-to-date with regard to this matter."

The fee to request a Police Information Check is $30.00 (as of July 2012) so I do not plan to incur this expense annually. Further to this end, as well as being a private studio teacher, I am a permanent, full-time teacher in public education which also requires an annual Police Check as a condition of employment.
